Jason Fernandez stands as one of the most accomplished specialists in the early history of Southlake Carroll football. A member of the 1988 undefeated State Championship team (16–0), Fernandez played a critical role in one of the most dominant seasons in program history, helping establish the foundation of what would become a Texas high school football powerhouse.
Widely recognized for his consistency and elite performance, Fernandez earned Parade All-American honors and was named Co–Player of the Year, placing him among the top high school players in the nation in 1990. He also garnered All-State, All-Area and All-District recognition further solidifying his impact on the field. Head Coach, Bob Ledbetter was quoted “Jason Fernandez is a Great athlete, who happens to be a kicker”. This was illustrated in his senior year as he earned All District as Kicker, Punter and Defensive back while also leading the Dragons in Receptions at Wide receiver. He rarely left the field in their 14-1 Season. Additionally, Jason lettered in 3 sports, earned All State at Third Base in Baseball, and won the Regional Golden Gloves High School Boxing Tournament in Fort Worth.
Over the course of his career, Fernandez recorded 212 extra points, ranking among the top totals in Texas high school football history for extra points and points scored by a kicker. His precision and reliability made him a key contributor to Carroll’s success, including a remarkable performance with 12 extra points in a single game during the championship season.
More than his accolades, Fernandez represents the early standard of excellence that helped shape Southlake Carroll football. His contributions were instrumental in elevating the program to statewide prominence, and his legacy continues to be reflected in the tradition of excellence carried on by future generations of Dragon athletes. He is most thankful for his Parents, Coaches, team-mates and time spent developing the discipline needed to succeed both on the field and in life today.
